Gas and composting station

The gas and composting station, GAJA, is intended for the reuse of organic household waste from the Greater Reykjavík Area.

The station will process up to 36,000 tonnes of household waste per year.

More about the project

Based on Sorpa’s plans, it will be possible to double the station’s capacity if necessary. It is expected that over 95% of the household waste that arrives at Sorpa’s receiving and sorting plant in Gufunes will be reused, in one way or another, when the station is completed.

The station consists of a reception facility for waste, a processing room and ten ripening chambers for organic waste, as well as tanks for making landfill gas.

Technical solutions come from Aikan/Solum AS in Denmark. The architects for the development of the project were Batteríið Architects and Mannvit has managed the tendering process. Construction was negotiated with Ístak, after a turnkey tender.

Verkís supervised construction, which included supervision of earthworks and construction works, supervision of the installation of gas production tanks and machinery, supervision of the installation of electrical and control equipment, and supervision of safety and environmental issues during construction.
